Freedom and Suffering...

Acts 28:11-31
Paul Arrives and Preaches in Rome Under Guard
"Go and say to my people,
You will hear my words, but you will not understand;
you will see what I do, but you will not perceive its meaning.
For the hearts of these people are hardened, and their ears cannot hear, and they have closed their eyes - so their eyes cannot see, and their ears cannot hear, and their hearts cannot understand, and they cannot turn to me and let me heal them."

I read a blog today http://kevinincambodia.blogspot.com/2011/12/nov-update-someones-waiting-or-taking.html and I find today's passage very relevant. To fully hear God's cry, we have to open our hearts and hands to receive Him... those who don't want to hear His message will find every reason to falsify His word and love... I am reminded of the very society we live in... the aethesists and the claims for "freedom" of speech and thought... what about our right to pray and stand for what we believe.  For now, I feel like have no "religious freedom" to practice what I want to do...  I want to be able to openly pray for the people and children I work with...

1 Peter 4:12- 5:7
Suffering for Being a Christian
"If you are suffering according to God's will, keep on doing what is right, and trust yourself to the God who made you, for he will never fail you."

We must also humble ourselves under God and in his good time he will honour us. Give all our worries to him, for he will care what happens to us.

Today we completed our insemination procedure.  Prognosis doesn't look that promising since there is no telling if I will release more than 1 egg and my husband had less than the recommended minimum number of viable sperm... like I said before, it will only be with God's approval and divine intervention that we conceive.

Living for God

Acts 28:1-10
Paul on the Island of Malta
When they first met Paul, a snake attached itself to his hand.  Paul managed to shake off the snake and was not bitten.  The people first cried that this was justice, Paul was no good and God was punishing him.  But when the realized Paul was untouched, they decided God must love him.  Paul then healed the sick in Malta and the people believed...

1 Peter 4: 7-11
Living for God
Most importantly, show deep love for one another. Love covers sins. Share your home with those who need a meal or a place to stay. Manage God's gifts well so that He can work through us...

I do hear this passage speak out at me regarding sharing my dwelling and offering my friend a place to stay when she visits our country in a few weeks time.

Suffering is inevitable, like death and taxes

Acts 26:1-32
Paul presents his side of the story to King Agrippa.  Paul tells him how he once persecuted Christians, but is now a firm follower. The council and the King agree that Paul has committed no crime worthy of death or imprisonment.

1 Peter 3:10-16
Suffering for Doing Good
The eyes of the Lord, watch over those who do right and his ears are open to their prayers. But the Lord turns his face against those who do evil.

Remember it is better to suffer doing good, if that is what God wants, than to suffer doing wrong.

In this life, suffering is inevitable, like death and taxes.

Tomorrow I start my ovulation testing and I go in for my breast ultrasound.  I know you are watching over me Father.

Pay back evil with a blessing...

Acts 25: 13-27
Paul Before Festus
Festus, troubled by Paul's trial, speaks to the King Agrippa.  The king agrees to oversee this trial. The Jews want Paul killed but the Roman officials see no reason for his death.
I am reminded how senseless our world can be, especially in the hands of those who don't think beyond themselves...

1 Peter 3:7-9
Husbands and All Christians
Husbands are to treat their wives with understanding.  She is your equal partner in God's gift of new life. If you  don't treat her as you should, your prayers will not be heard.
We should be full of sympathy and humbleness. Don't repay evil with evil. Pay them back with a blessing...

Now that is food for thought... treat my enemy like a friend...
Last day for Clomiphene Citrate.  I actually read up on the details of this treatment.  The prognosis will not be a good one for us... I have self-dignosed myself with Low Ovarian Reserve, aka Premature Ovarian Failure (POF).  Although I don't seem to exhib the classic tell tale signs of this, ie. irregular periods and high FSH levels, my ovaries had a poor response when stimulated with Gonal F.

In my readings, it said that it is not impossible to get pregnant, it's just that it would be more difficult.  But because there is another fertility issue, low sperm count and motility, the odds really are not in our favour.  It would require divine intervention... God.

Over the past few weeks, I have been questioning myself, wondering if I really want to have children.  A few months ago, I would have assertively said, "Yes, without a doubt".  But now, I do have my doubts.  I am beginning to question if God has a different plan for me.

So Father, I ask that you yell and scream into my mind where is it I should go... where is it that you need me to be.  Although I love my job, working with kids, I haven't found any "die-hard" friends at work... this makes me sad... there's no source of motivation...

Beauty and Godliness from within...

Acts 25: 1- 12
Paul Appears before Festus
It is evident how brave and righteous Paul is.  His strength comes from knowing God is there to back him up...  How confident can I act... in my head I have an image of the "trust" fall.  Do I trust God to catch me... now I do... all is well... with my soul...

1 Peter 3:1-6
Wives
I should be known for my beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle, quiet spirit, which is so precious to God. I am reminded that even if my husband has strayed away from God's path, my godly life will speak to him better than any words.

Thank you for these reminders and words of comfort and encouragement.

Believing, Following and Representing... God

It's my Day 3.  I officially started my Chlomophene today.
Acts 22:30 - 23:35
Paul - The Planning of his Killing to his exile to Caesarea
Paul had his face slapped by the high priest because he said he had lived before God in good conscience.  Many did not realize he was a Pharisee and he had divided the council telling them he believed in the resurrection of Christ.  Pharisees believe this, but the Sadducees do not. The following day, a group of Jews made a pact to not eat or drink until they had Paul killed.  They wanted to kill Paul as he was being transported between the prison and the high council.  Paul's nephew heard this and warned Paul who asked his nephew to report it to the commander. The commander then sent Paul to Govenor Felix to have him tried there.

This is actually quite amazing.  The plot definitely thickens.

1 Peter 1:14 - 2:16
A Call to Holy Living
"Obey God because you are his children. Don't slip back into your old ways of doing evil...He will judge or reward you according to what you do... I warn you to keep away from evil desires because they fight against your very souls."

Realising you're wrong is one thing, but continuing to do it with it conscious in your mind is absolutely WRONG. It's one thing to be ignorant and other to be evil.  Yes we are sinners.  But as God's children we need to represent, not disappoint.  God doesn't disappoint us.  We do...  God does judge.  What is fair in our eyes doesn't matter.  God sees the bigger picture.  We are merely a pixel in the grand scheme of things... but a single missing pixel would destroy the perfection of the piece.  So no matter little we feel we are, we are surprisingly important.  We make choices.  That's God gift to us... freedom to believe and freedom to follow.  I choose to believe, follow and do my best to represent...

Birthrite... a gift or a curse?

It's been a while...
It's Day 1 of my IUI with Chlomiphine cycle.  I really am not very excited.  I am filled with some aprehension and negative energy.  Not a good thing really...  I am feeling a bit overwhelmed with work.  I think I need to back off for a while... question becomes how...

God are you telling me to rest my mind so that I can find rest in you?
Acts 22:17-29
Paul Speaks to the Crowd & Reveals His Roman Citizenship
Upon reading this, I am reminded that our birthrite is a symbol of status.  Paul preached and as Christ had predicted, the crowd turned on him and wanted him dead.  The soldiers bound him and were about to whip him, when Paul announced that he was a Roman citizen.  It was then that the soldiers withdrew.  This makes me think about the signifigance of wealth.  In Chinese the expression of being born sucking on a golden key... I also am reminded of those who were born only to suffer.  Then I think of myself and realise how much you have blessed me, giving me a life beyond what I truly deserve...

1Peter 1:8-13
The Hope of Eternal Life
This passage is a reminder that Christ suffered on the cross so that we may live forever.  This is something we do not deserve... especially when we look at how we treat each other...

The Waiting Game

Yikes!  Definitely went on a break these past few days... very sick and had lots to do... still have lots to do.  I started a new cross-stitch! =)

Acts 17: 16-34
Paul Preaches in Athens
Paul spoke out against the idol worship in Athens. He preached to any and all who would listen. He was even asked to debate his "religion" with scholars.  This makes me think that I need to do the same... speak out against idols... or at the very least live by this...

James 2:10-13
A Warning Against Prejudice
Whatever we say or do, we will be judged. If we are not merciful towards others, how can expect God to be merciful towards us?

I thank you for your continued words of support and guidance.  We are embarking on our last kick at the can with reproductive medicine.  I have no expectations from this next set of procedures.  I leave it all in your hands, Lord.  For without your blessing, there is nothing.  When speaking with the doctor, the chances of a pregnancy per IUI is less than 5% per month.  With IVF, we were looking at 15%.  Father, you are one of miracles, but I have come to the crossroads and I am OK with not ever having to be pregnant.  Our sermon last week was great.  I was reminded that I am your prized possession and that I am lovable.  You are not punishing me.  Circumstances happen, tragedies happen... they are not necessarily God's will, but things we or others close to us bring about out of fear or because of a costly choice. We don't always see the bigger picture or our purpose... you do.

Satan will tempt us with the one thing we can't have.  Father, you have blessed us with everything, but a baby.  This is what Satan can use to tempt us.  I am thankful, that I have not become bitter and have turned away from you.  I am thankful that my husband is slowly turning back to you.  For it is only in you, that we will find eternal and righteous comfort.

I trust you, Lord. I will not be angry if I am not pregnant over the next 3 months.  In fact, I will be elated that this stuggle will be over and I will be able to move to another chapter of my life.  I have no question that you have equipped my husband and me with all the tools to be a great parents and teachers.  It is now a matter of time.

Draw me into the light... from trouble to joy

Acts 15:22-41
The Letter for Gentile Believers & Paul and Barnabas Separate
This passage reiterates what was read yesterday regarding the need to abstain from eating food sacrificed to idols.  Paul and Barnabas separate because of John Mark. Paul did not feel John Mark was faithful since he abandoned the both of them when they were to share the Gospel under extreme persecution and ridicule.  Who is right?  Barnabas takes John Mark with him towards Cyprus, while Paul takes Silas to Syria and Cilicia.

James 1:1-4
Faith and Endurance
In just reading the title, I know Father you are addressing a deep concern of mine... my own faith and endurance.
"... Whenever trouble comes your way, let it be an opportunity for joy.  For when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow... " (2,3)

Turning trouble into joy is no easy feat.  I definitely pray for your grace and wisdom in this department.  I understand and see that our faith is always tested and it is in our patience that we learn about ourselves and our committment and devotion to you.

So help me Father, to see the positive side of everything and to draw light rather than darkness into my life.

Finding Joy

Acts 15:1-21
The Council at Jerusalem
This passage is a reminder that God sent Christ to save all of us.  Cirumcision is not required to be saved.  We should stop eating meat sacrificed to idols... this makes me think of my in-laws as they are faithful to their religion and they do sacrifice their food to their "elders/ancestors"...

Hebrews 13:17 -25
Jesus never ceased being God...but he did abandon his power of being God to experience human conditions.  Jesus willingly bore our sins.  We should be able to put the needs of others before ourselves. We must make time for others - JOY (Jesus, Others, Yourself).  By using JOY as our acroynm of priority, we will find joy...

God Never Fails

Acts 14:8-20a
Paul and Barnabas in Lystra and Derbe
Both men shared the Gospel and healed a crippled man.  The people thought of them as Gods, Hermes and Zeus.  They wanted to burn sacrifices to the Gods.  Paul and Barnabas would not have any of that.  As they were trying to explain how they were human, Jews from the other cities these apostles visited  began to start stoning Paul.  The crowd became a mob and Paul was dragged out of the city appearing dead.  As believers stood around Paul's body, Paul got up and left this city with Barnabas.

Praise God!

Hebrews 13:1-9
Concluding Words
"I will never fail you.  I will never forsake you." (5)
"The Lord is my helper, so I will not be afraid.  What can mere mortals do to me? (6)

Father thank you for reminding me of these words... that you will never fail me and you will never forsake me... thus, I will stand tall and not be afraid...

We are not worthy of God's greatest gift...

Acts 14:1-7
Paul and Barnabas in Iconium
Both apostles preached God's word and performed miracles.  However, distension was apparent and rumours that people were planning to stone Paul and Barnabas erupted. Thus, the two fled and spread God's word to others.

This is sad, but not surprising. Satan's army will always be here.  They will always try to destroy God's work and all who have faith in our Lord.  Satan's aim is to drive a wedge between us and God.  Unfortunately, Satan does a good job of it...

Hebrews 12:25-29
A Call to Listen to God
"We are receiving a kingdom that cannot be destroyed, let us be thankful and please God by worshipping him with holy fear and awe.  For our God is a consuming fire." (29)

How beautiful and true.  Our God is one who loves us and one that we should also fear because he has great power and can destroy us in a blink of an eye.  We are not worthy of his gift of eternal life.

God's Gift of Everlasting Life

Acts 13: 45-52
Paul Turns to the Gentiles
When Paul and Barnabas preached the Gospel to the Jews, the Jewish leaders came out and argued against them.  As such, Paul told them they were unworthy of God's gift of everlasting life and thus told the Gentiles, this gift was thus now freely given to them.  Paul and Barnabas were then chased out of this town

We will always have people speak out against our faith and our belief.  These people have "closed" ears and hearts.  We are not to judge them but ask God to forgive them for their own ignorance and selfishness and we are to continue with our message to those who are willing and open to hearing God's message.

Hebrews 14:18-24
A Call to Listen to God
"Those who are not holy, will not see the Lord" (14)
"You have come to God himself, who is the judge of all people" (23)

Without Christ, God can seem very mean.  But with Christ, we see God's love for us.  We are to forgive and not seek out vengence.  We are not to let "gossip" and spiteful actions take root in us for it is poision for our souls.

Giving Thanks...

Acts 13:1-12
Barabas and Saul Are Sent Out
Both met a Jewish sorcerer, a false prophet, named Bar-Jesus.  Elmyas, the socerer tried to stop Saul from speaking the words of God to the govenor and Saul , with the help of the Holy Spirit called Elmyas the son of the devil and made him blind!  Wow! Once the govenor heard this, he believed.

Hebrews 12:1-4
God's Discipline Proves His Love
This passage is about how Jesus endured much shame and pain for our sins.  How can we give up on Him?  Our pain and shame doesn't even come close to what he sacrificed for our sake.  Thank you, Lord.

I Pray for Your Strength

Acts 11:19-30
The Church of Antioch of Syria
Before this Church, prophets only preached to the Jews.  It began at this Church that prophets preached to the Gentiles... God saves us all.

Hebrews 11:24-29
In this passage we are reminded of Moses faith in God and how he left the comforts of the palace as Royalty to be with peasants.

So I ask myself, where is my faith? What will I give up to follow your ways? I can only give as much as you give me strength to do.  At this time, I am running on your strength as I have none.  I thank you for the energy you provide for me at school.  I know it is you people see in me.  You are my source of strength.  I thank you for the ideas and patience you provide.  Father, I ask that you continue to carry me through.

Where is my faith?

Acts 11:1-18
Peter Explains His Actions
This passage is how Peter explains that God wants to save the Gentiles too, not just the Jews.  We cannot be judgemental or prejudiced/biased against others.  I am exhausted Lord, I ask for comfort in your arms for I am truly tired.

Hebrews 11:21-23
Great Examples of Faith
We are reminded of Jacob's, Joseph's and Moses' faith in God.  Where is mine?

Patience and Faith... God's combination...

Acts 9: 36-43
Peter Heals Aeneas and Raises Dorcas
Tabitha is the English version of Dorcas.  Tabitha was kind and helped the poor. She became sick and died.  When her friends heard Paul was in town, they sent 2 men to ask Peter to bring Tabitha back to life.  Indeed upon praying to God, Tabitha got up!

Hebrews 11:7-12
Great Examples of Faith
This passage reminds me to have faith.  God will provide us with what we yearn for.  Patience is the key.  I am reminded about Noah, Abraham and Sarah... nothing is impossible with God.

I will be going for minor surgery to unblock a partially blocked fallopian tube.  This will be crucial since we'll be doing IUI with chlomophine.  Looks like this will end in February of 2012.  I am so tired Lord.  A part of me has accepted that I will not bare children, I am just going through the motions to please my husband, so he can move on...

Father, I do pray for your strength and wisdom and patience for the next few months. I currently feel indifferent.  I just want to move on and serve you Father.

Thursday, October 20, 2011

We must have faith...

Acts 9:19b-35
Saul in Demascus and Jerusalum
The believers were walking in fear of the Lord but in the comfort of the Holy Spirit (31).  What an interesting line. It seems to be dichotomy of thoughts, but then it isn't...
This passage shows how God uses Saul to convert many.  Many people recognized Saul as the one who didn't believe and was adament about persecuting all followers of Christ.  So how shocked were people to hear that he was a "die hard" follower.  Even the apostles thought Saul was faking his belief to get "close" to them... In fact he was so great at convincing others about the truth of the gospel that Jewish leaders plotted to have him murdered.  It was through God's hands that Saul escapes being killed twice.

This is affirmation of how great God's plan for each of us if we just let Him use us.

Peter Heals Aeneas and Raises Dorcas
In this passage Peter cries out for Aeneas, a man who had been bedridden and paralyzes to get up.  Surely he does and the people in the village befieve in Christ.  This reminds me of how "unfaithful" we are.  We must see to believe...  we shouldn't we should trust the Holy Spirit inside us...

Hebrews 10:32 - 11:6
Do not throw away this confident trust in the Lord, no matter what happens. Remember the great reward it brings you! Patient endurance is what you need now, so you will continue to do God's will. Then you will receive all that he has promised.  (35,36)

This is a reminder of God's message to me in Cambodia... patience...

Great Examples of Faith
It is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to Him, must believe there is a God and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him. (6)
Yes Lord.  I have been seeking you most of my life and now I find you coursing through me, which makes me so thankful that you love me.

Saul's Conversion and the Need for Fellowship

What a great small group I have! =)
Thank you for the joy of laughter and warmth of friends.
Acts 9 -1-19a
Saul's Conversion
Wow! Saul was a man who worked for Satan for he was out to persecute all believers.  His dream was to bring all who believed in Christ to Jeruselum in chains!  It was on one of his trips that he was blinded by a light and fell to the ground.  Jesus was crying out to him asking why he was persecuting his followers.  Saul became blind and his companions walked him to the nearest city.  It was at this time, Christ asked Ananias to deliver a message to Saul on his behalf.  Upon delivering this message, Saul regained his sight and committed his life to Jesus.

Hebrews 10:26-31
A Call to Persevere
The Lord will judge his own people (30)
If we are faithful, judgement will be easy...

Commentary on why we need fellowship with others.
1. to provide us with encouragement and love
2. to have role models to help us develop into mature christians
3. to help us discern from false teachings
4. to prepare us for Christ's return

I think small groups are definitely important, as it is all about fellowship and prayer...

Fill Me Up, Lord

Acts 8: 26-40
Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch
This is a story where the Holy Spirit moved Philip to go up to explain a passage of scripture to a complete stranger.  In spending time with each other, the eunuch asked Philip to baptize him!  Hallelujah!  If it were only that easy to get others to believe...

Hebrews 10:23-25
A Call to Persevere
This passage is to remind me that God keeps his promises!  He asks us to spontaneously do good and lift others.  We are not to neglect our meeting together and proclaim Christ's return...

Thank you Father for this passage for I surely have run out of steam and have not been letting you shine through me.  I have shut the blinds... I have to open them again.  Father, I ask for your strength and patience, for I am weary.  Fill me up with you energy and spirit. Amen.

Our God is Mighty to Save

Dear Lord, am I ever stressed.  Father, I give you my burden... please take it...
I have not been as diligent about my devotions and have felt out of sorts.  I pray for your forgiveness.

Acts 7:44-60
This is a passage about a man named Stephen who was stoned to death for telling the people and officials that we are stubborn people because we are heathen at the heart and deaf to the truth because we resist the Holy Spirit.  He went on to say how we betrayed our Messiah and persecute God's prophets...

This reminds me of how we are blinded by money and greed.  We lack faith and only believe when we are given proof... how sad we are...

Hebrews 10:1-18
Christ's Sacrifice One for All
I love this line, " I will never again remember their sins and lawless deeds." (17)

Christ's sacrifice was the ultimate one. Our God is mighty to save.

Lord of Lords

Acts 6:8-7:16
Stephen is Arrested and Addresses the Council
Stephen was a man who God gave great wisdom.  Jealous people spread rumors saying that Stephen spoke out against the Temple and Moses.  However, when he was brought before the council, Stephen recounted how God had appeared to them since the time of Abraham.

Hebrews 9:16-23
Christ is the Perfect Sacrifice
This passage tells us in Moses' days, everything had to be purified with blood for the forgiveness of sins.  This is no longer the case for Christ's death purfied all of all sins...

How great is He who's the Lord of Lords, the King of Kings, He is wonderful...

Grateful for your gift of life

Acts 6:1-7
Seven Men Chosen to Serve
Division of labour, leadership and deligation of tasks... these are important to ensure we don't mismanage or misuse or underuse our spiritual gifts.  It was great the apostles reallized that they didn't need to spend time passing out food.  Their time was better spent spreading the gospel and praying for others.

Hebrews 9:11-15
Christ is the Perfect Sacrifice
"Christ died to set them free from the penalty of the sins they had committed under that first covenant." (15)
Prior to Christ's sacrifice, people sacrificed goats and cows to cleanse their sins.  How great and precious is Christ's blood compared to that of an animal!

Thank you God for dying on the Cross for me.  I pray for continued strength for the next few months.  I pray that you will watch over my husband as I know his faith will be tested again and I know he is rather frail.  We will be starting another round of reproductive medicine.  I leave all this in your hands Father, as I am devoid of all feeling about this at this point in time.  I am cherishing my moments with friends and family and my students... so in these things I am blessed.  Thank you Lord.

Christ is our Direct Line to God!

Acts 5:26-42
Apostles Meet Opposition
"The Messiah you are looking for is Jesus!" (42)
The Pharisees wanted to kill the apostles, but it was Gamaliel that told them not to.  For he said, if these people are false prophets, eventually those who believe will wither to nothing.  But if what they say is true, God is behind them.  For the Pharisees to kill them would be to go against God, himself!
And so here we are, over 2000 years later, still proclaiming the Gospel!  So it must be true!

Hebrews 9:1-10
Old Rules About Worship
This passage is how people used to worship God in the presence of the Ark of the Covenent.  Only the most high priest could present offerings to cleanse the sins of many.  This is no longer the case.  By professing our faith to Christ, our sins can be cleansed.  Christ is our direct path to God.

Father, thank you for sending Christ to take away the sins of the world and allowing us all access to you via Jesus.

God's Promise

Acts 5: 12-25
The Apostles Heal Many
After the death of Christ, his disciples began to spread the gospel and heal the sick.  People would come and lie on the streets just so Peter's shadow could cast upon them and heal them! The Sadducees were enraged and jealous.  The had the apostles thrown in jail, but God sent an angel to release them that evening and told them to head to the Temple.

Wow! People came just to be in the presence of Peter's shadow.  That is amazing.  We should not doubt the powers of our Lord.  For he will provide always...

Hebrews 8:7-13
Christ is our High Priest
This passage talks about God making a new covenant with us, where He will forgive all our wrong doings when we come to know Him...

This ties in with our sermon from yesterday where God meets us at the heart of the storms of our lives.  We can hide all we want from God, but He will find us, so we can give Him all our fears and we can find comfort and rest in His arms. Praise God!

The Holy Spirit is God in Us

Acts 5:1-11
Ananias and Sapphira
The passages tells us that the Holy Spirit is God, not just a force. We can sin against the Spirit by doing the following things:
1. lying - doing things without committing through the heart
2. grieving - this is done when we carry anger in hearts, put down others and anything that is against the new nature inside of us.
3. quenching - holding back from giving the Spirit complete control, meaning we resist changing from our old ways by ignoring His promptings
4.resisting - the desire of the Spirit is to bring us closer to God;however, pride will often stop us from acknowledging Christ as our Saviour.  Christ, himself,  called us stubborn people.
5. insulting - dismissing the great price Jesus paid for us on the Cross; refusing to accept the gift of salvation...
6. blaspheming - rejecting Jesus as our Saviour. This is the ultimate sin, this is the point of no return...

This is a great and informative passage about a husband and wife, Ananias and Sappira, who conspired to cheat God. They were to sell  land that give that money to apostles.  Out of greed they kept part of the money for themselves.  When caught and confronted, they died instantly.

Hebrews 8:1-6
Christ is our High Priest
This passage begins by telling us that Christ sits on the right hand of God.  Our places of worship are a mere "shadow" of the real one in Heaven.

Father, I thank for today's message about the Holy Spirit.  I know for a fact that I have been quenching and grieving the Spirit.  I ask for courage to break this cycle so that I can set the Spirit that lives within me free - free to follow your ways.

Christ is always on our side

Acts 4:23-37
The Believers Pray for Courage
This passage asks, "Why did the nations rage?  Why did the people waste with time with futile plans?" (25)
So Father, I ask the same question.  Why do we try to do things without God?  For without God's blessing, nothing will good will come.

Hebrews 7:23-28
Christ is like Melchizedek
Jesus was appointed by God to be a priest forever.  Therefore, Jesus can save people forever. Jesus lives forever to plead with God on our behalf.

It is comforting to know that Christ will always be on our side.

Power of Prayer

Today's post will be about my final mission debrief meeting. It was great to see familiar faces and it was awesome to share with others about my husband's desire to serve in Cambodia next summer.  I am ecstatic with the power of prayer and am thoroughly humbled by God's grace and blessing.

Earlier this afternoon, I was once again filled with negative thoughts and energy regarding work, but God, you spared me and shone through me.  I felt your power and energy fill me up and you helped me work through it and turn it into a positive experience.  So Father, thank you.

You made me recollect my pre and post feelings about Cambodia.  I came back with renewed patience and learned to ask for your help and give up my burdens to you.  So Father, here am I, please take all that I cannot bare, and use me for your glory.

When I sit back and hear others describe me, I sometimes can't believe they're talking about me... actually, I know it's you they're talking about. It's your qualities that are shining through me... it's your love eminating out of me.  You have brought me great joy - people hear my laugh and see my smile.  It is seemingly contagious.  That is a good thing.  You give me ways with words and wisdom so that I can impact lives.  You are my blessing.

My Lord, My King, Tells Me to be Patient

Acts 2: 14-39
Peter Preaches to a Crowd
I love this quote that King David said about Jesus, 'I know the Lord is always with me.  I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.  No wonder my heart is filled with joy, and my mouth shouts his praises.  My body rests in hope.' (25,26)

How beautiful this is... to know that God is along side me every step of the way, in times of sadness and in times of grief.

I also love this saying from Peter, ' Each of you must turn from your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of the Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.  Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.' (38)

So does this mean, we will only receive the gift of the Holy Spirit when we are baptized, but receive the gift of life in Christ when we choose to follow him?
In the supplementary text, it mentions that the Holy Spirit is not there just to allow us to "feel" a certain way, but rather to accomplish something based on our feeling. The Holy Spirit can be like dynamite, giving us bursts of new energy or it can be "power" to keep us going.  We must tap into this "dynamite" so we can have Christ shine through us.

Hebrews 6:7-15
This is a passage about patience. This reminds me of God's message to me... God took an oath in his own name saying: I will certainly bless you richly, and I will multiply your descendants into countless millions... Abraham waited patiently and he recieved what God had promised. (13-15)
I can hear God whispering to me, "Patience, my child, patience..."

So Father, I pray that you will give me more patience and peace,  not only in my yearning for a child, but also in my work place, in working with others.  I pray that you will continue to work through me and to bless me so that I may bless others.  I pray that you will give me energy, the energy of a thousand horses so that I can get all my work done, but also the wisdom to leave my work  when necessary... as you tell us the need for a break.

My Sin, My Shame

Acts 2:1-13
The Holy Spirit Comes
On the day of Pentacost, 7 weeks after Christ's resurrection the Holy Spirit descended upon a group of believers.  They were speaking in other languages proclaiming God's glory and the work he has done.  Those in the crowd were astonished and bewildered, but passerbys believed they were drunk.

Hebrews 6:1-6
Once you call Christ your saviour and choose to follow Him, you cannot be expected to be 'saved' again - for you were/are already saved.  If you choosed to then abandon him, by reverting to your old ways, you will not be allowed entrance to the kingdom of God.  By rejecting Christ again, you have chosen to re-nail him on the cross holding him up to public shame, knowing that he is innocent.

Father, ask for renewed energy and strength today, as I seemingly have none. I pray that you will hold me up so that I will not appear "drunken", but rather, fully alert, representing your will and your glory.

Wedding Bells... a new message...

Acts 1: 1-26
The Promise of the Holy Spirit & the Ascension of Jesus
Christ appeared to many people for 40 days after his crucifixion.  He repeated this: John baptized you with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit (5).
Judas had to betray Jesus in order for the prophesy to come true.  With the money he recieved for his treachery, he purchased a field and died there.  This field was named the Field of Blood. Mattias was chosen to become the apostle to replace Judas.

The Field of Blood, I'd actually like to visit this place one day...

Hebrews 5:7-14
A Call to Spiritual Growth
This passage tells us that as young Christians we are like babies who feed only on milk and not on solid food.  We are not getting the full value of being a Christian until was can "eat solid food".

Personal Reflection

I skipped 2 days of devotion... mostly because I ran out of time or was just too tired.  This is no excuse, so Father I ask your hand in discipline as I am obviously short on it right now.  I ask for strength and energy.

I attended a wedding yesterday.  I haven't attended one in a few years.  The bride was someone I worked with many years ago.  She is the same as my sister and when she graduated from university, she ended up working with my husband.  Her wedding reminded me of mine and my vows to my husband.  I look at him and I know that he was sent to me by you, Father.  Even though we've been married for over 8 years, it doesn't feel like it at all!

There were 2 new things I learned from their Church service. The first was the symbolism behind the Unity Candle.  It not only symbolizes our 2 lives as one, but also Christ's light in us.  We should take time to light this candle every so often to remember our vows.  He asked us to light it whenever we pray together or suffer because of an arguement.  This is such a great idea!  The other thing I learned was the symbolism behind feeding each other cake.  The cake symbolizes "food".  We would ensure that neither of us would go hungry and we would feed each other first before feeding ourselves... we can think of this food as the Christ is the bread of our life.  The cake is a great metaphor.

Come, Little One, Come...

John 21: 1-14
Jesus Appears to 7 Disciples
In Christ's 3rd encounter after his resurrection, Jesus helps his disciples gather fish and meets them for breakfast.  The disciples do not ask if he is Jesus, they know he is.

Please help me to be more like Jesus' disciples, especially Simon Peter, who upon hearing your name, jumped into the lake to swim to you. Help me to be as trusting as Simon Peter.

Hebrews 4:7-13
Promised Rest for God's People (cont'd)
"Nothing in all creation can hide from him. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes. This is the God to whom we must explain all that we have done." (13)

There will come a day when we will have to face God and explain our choices.  I want to be able to stand before him, proud.  I want God to be proud of me - proud of the fact that he was able to use me to help others.  I want to be a blessing to others.

Just yesterday, we went to PCRM.  I know that this will be our last bridge to "natural child birth", at least as natural as we can have a baby.  This time the endevour will be IUI with Clomid, a drug to stimulate superovulation.  I do have my doubts.  I believe it's because I don't want to put my trust in Science, but rather in God.  God, I know that if this is your will, I will be pregnant. However, I will not overstress or even think much about it.  This is a worry I will pass on to you.

My heart is very much entrenched in adopting overseas.  Even if I were to be pregnant naturally, I still want to adopt another child.  I can't help, but feel this is coming from you. This trip to Cambodia and Wilson's trip to Vietnam... all of our experiences, though separate, are meaningful insights to your bigger picture for us.  I know you hear my cries and my prayers.  I know they will be answered in your time, not mine. I have been impatient most of my life, working as fast as I possible can.  I equate myself to being crazy rabbit - a true task master.

Someone once told me that my child is out there, I just have to call his/her name, but at the same token, this child must want to also be mine.  So "Child of mine," hear my voice, "It is time to come into this world. Do not be afraid. We will love you as much as Christ loves us."

Heaven, A Place of Rest

John 20:19-31
Jesus Appears to His Disciples
In his appearance to them, Christ gave his disciples the power to forgive others, "If you forgive anyone's sins, they are forgiven. If you refuse to forgive anyone's sins, they are unforgiven"(23)

Because Thomas was not with the other disciples when Christ appeared, he refused to believe that Christ showed up. He said," I won't believe it unless I see the nail wounds in his hands, put my fingers into them and place my hand into the wound in his side... Jesus appears 8 days later and says," You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who haven't seen me and believe anyways."

I can imagine how ashamed Thomas must have felt. He had no faith... there are many of us like that. The passage goes on to tell us that Christ did more things than is written.  These words were written so that we would come to know and believe in Christ so that we could receive life in Him.  What a beautiful thing!

Hebrews 4:1-6
Promised Rest for God's People
This passage is a reminder that God created Heaven on the seventh day so He had a place to rest.  We, too, are invited to this place if we believe in Him.

So Father, thank you.  Thank you for this place of rest, for it is in this life that we will work tirelessly for you and with you.

Encouragement Needed

John 20: 1-18
The Resurrection & Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene
I can't even imagine what it would be like to witness Jesus after his resurrection. I can imagine myself being Mary, bewildered by the loss of Jesus' body.

Hebrews 3:15-19
Those who disobey God will not be allowed to enter Heaven because of their unbelief.

Father, I pray for your encouragement and strength to be the one you need me to be. I am tired and I ask for renewal, physical and spiritual. I went to a Small Group info night and ended up joining a small group today - not sure if it will work, but I have committed 8 Tuesdays starting next Tuesday.

Being a Window to God

John 19:31-42
The Burial of Jesus
Because of Passover, the priests wanted the accused to die quickly asking that their legs be broken.  Jesus was already dead, so they pierced his side watching blood and water flow from his body. Joseph of Arimathea (secret follower of Christ) took down Christ's body and prepared it for burial with Nicodemus.  They buried him in a tomb close to the crucifixion site.

It's amazing how it was prophesized that not a single bone would be broken upon His death...

Hebrews 3:7-14
Jesus is Greater than Moses
This is a passage that reminds us to trust in our Father and to not harden our hearts, but to listen to his voice.

Father you have placed something on my mind and in my heart... gendercide in China.  I cannot believe what I am seeing before my eyes.  You put me on this "fortunate" side of the world for a reason. You gave me "more" so that I could find pleasure in giving to others through you. Father, what you have placed in my heart, I have shared with my students today.  Unimaginable crimes... crimes of humanity... am I more sensitive because I don't have a child of my own.  Father, I can't help but feel that you are calling me to serve in this capacity and in this ministry.  So Father, I pray for your guidance and you wisdom to fight this battle and to see where you want me positioned.

I love the analogy Father Moe shared in his sermon with us yesterday.  We are windows to you - to your greatness.  So when we perform acts, they are in your name, not ours.  We ask others not to look at our accomplishments, but to look through us to see you.  We are windows.  People don't necessarily admire the glass, but the view beyond.

The Crucifixion

John 19:16-30
The Crucifixion
Pilate had written a sign over Jesus head - Jesus of Nazarethm, King of the Jews.  The priests wanted it to read, "He said, I am King of the Jews" to which Pilate refused. Jesus made sure his mother was taken care of after his death and cried out, "It is finished" when he was ready to give up his spirit.

Thank you Lord for your Son, Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 2:16 - 3:6
Jesus is Greater than Moses
This passage tells us clearly that Moses was a faithful servant of God, but Christ was and is God's faithful son.

John 19: 1-15
Jesus Sentenced to Death
Brutal... to be crucified by the ones you love, to be beaten by the ones you came to save. Pilate tried 3 times to release Jesus, but failed.  His death was inevitable. It was needed to fulfill his purpose, to ensure we had a chance to be with God after this earthly life.

Hebrews 2:11-15
Jesus, the Man (cont'd)
"Only in this way (death in human form) could he deliver those who have lived all their lives as slaves to the fear of dying" (15)

Thank you, Jesus.  Thank you is definitely not enough.  You have blessed us so abundantly.  Without you, this life would be meaningless for we'd be in Hell.  Thank you for your death on the Cross to rectify our wrongs, our sins, our shame.

Jesus Dies for You and for Me

John 18:28-40
Jesus' Trial Before Pilate
Jesus was brought before the Roman govenor so he could be executed since the Jewish had no authority to sentence anyone to death. Pilate, after questioning Jesus, realized he was no criminal.  He asked the Jewish people if they wanted to have him released on Passover.  To this, they said they would rather Pilate release Barabbas, a known criminal over Jesus.

How sad... very sad...

Hebrews 2:5-10
Jesus, the Man
By God's grace, Jesus tasted death for everyone in all the world. (9)

I am reminded that it is by God's grace I am as blessed as I am.  Father thank you for your continued outpouring of love for me.  I ask that you give me the will power needed to glorify you in all aspects of my life.  Please purge the negative energy from my life, allow me to transform it into something positive... like shedding some much needed weight.

Staying Strong and True to Jesus

John 18:15-27
Peter's 3 Denials
This passage reminds me that no matter how devoted we are, we will blunder.  Peter told Jesus how much he loved him and would never deny knowing or following him.  But sure enough, his fear, caused him to deny Jesus 3 times.  I am certain I am guilty of this.  In public, around non-Christians, I fear being ridiculed.  Thus, I have been asking Christ for strength in this area of my life.

Being a teacher, I really value this verse:
I teach nothing in private that I have not said in public. (20)
I must be bold in my teaching and address issues of "religion" in class as students bring them up in a way that would glorify God.

Hewbrews 2:1-4
A Warning Against Drifting Away
This passage, to me, is a reminder that we know and have heard the truth.  If we choose to ignore it, the truth that Jesus Christ died on a Roman cross for our sins so that we could spend eternity with God, then we have drifted away.  We will not be saved, we will be denied our ticket to be God in heaven.

There is an excellent exerpt on this passage in the text. God loves us all, but cannot save us all because he has given us the gift of free will. We can choose between right and wrong, good and evil, God and Satan, and heaven and hell. Anyone who ends up in hell, chose to be there, s/he chose to deny God.  C.S. Lewis writes, "The gates of Hell are locked from the inside"... they choose to stay in Hell...

Father, I thank you for this message and I thank you for today's day of rest.  I ask Father that you give me strength and the power of efficiency to complete my tasks.  I pray that you will continue to give me a heart like yours so that I can overlook the pettiness of people who I work with and allow my love for you shine.  Give me a thankful and forgiving heart.

Jesus' Prayer of Protection

John 17: 1-26
The Prayer of Jesus
Jesus prays that we will come to know him and follow him.  He asks for us to be protected from the Evil one.

John 18: 1-14
Jesus is Betrayed and Arrested
Jesus awaits his fate and accepts it bravely.
Philimon 1:8-25
Paul's Appeal for Onesimus
Paul asks for forgiveness on behalf of Onesimus

Hebrews 1:1-14
Jesus Christ is God's Son
Angels are only servants.  They are spirits sent from God to care for those who will receive salvation.  Christ was not an angel. Christ is God's son.

Father, I thank you for the readings today. I pray that you will continue to fill me with your words of wisdom and protect me from the Evil one.

A Beacon of Joy, Comfort and Love to Others

John 16:16-33
Sadness Will Be Turned to Joy
Ask, using my name, and you will receive and you will have abundant joy. (24)
I have told you all this, so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth, you will have many trials and sorrows.  But take heart, because I have overcome the world. (33)

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for the joy you have provided and blessed me with. I have found peace in you and I have faced some trials and sorrows and thankfully I had you.  Father, I continue to ask, in the name of Christ Jesus, that you will continue to be along side me in future trials and sorrows and I ask that I may soon mother a child as you have modeled a parent's comfort to me.  you have given me great joy in your patience with my husband and giving him peace to move forward and to give his pain and sorrow to you.  I know you are capable of all miracles, Father, I have seen glimpses of your bigger picture for us. So Father, I pray that you will continue to give us wisdom and strength in our faith to follow you to become one of your strongest warriors in this battle of darkness.

Philemon 1:1-7
Paul's Thanksgiving and Prayer
I (Paul) have gained so much joy and comfort from your love because your kindness has so often refreshed the hearts of God's people. (7)
Father, let me be like Philemon.  I want to be able to give joy, comfort and love so others may see you through me.

Leave Those Who Disagree with God

John 16: 1-15
The Work of the Holy Spirit
When we believe in Christ, the Holy spirit will come upon us and show us the truth and how to live our lives in ways that are pleasing to God.  So Holy Spirit, please work in me so that I can continue to share God's love with all who I meet.

Titus 3:9-15
Paul's Final Remarks and Greetings
Paul tells us not to engage in spirital arguments about whose religion is correct.  These things are useless and not fruitful.  It will only lead to division and confusion.  If the person you are speaking to continues to harass you about your belief, give them no more 2 chances, before you give up on befriending them.  For this kind of friend is not worth having. We are to spend our time helping others who have urgent needs.

Thank you Father for this message.  I will heed your words of wisdom.

My 50th Post - My Transformation from being a diluted Christian

Today's posting is a different one.  I am going to share how God has been working to change me.  I'm going to include my reflection.

I first thought about joining Tenth Cambodia mission team nearly 5 years ago.  God had planted a seed in my heart. As the years pressed on I knew I had slowly distanced myself away from him and hearing his voice.  I would say about year ago, I hear God – loud and clear – that it was time… time for a change. At first I thought God would use me to touch someone and make a difference in someone’s life in Cambodia. So much as I enjoyed seeing Cambodia and saw God work  through me to help the people through our medical ministry, I realized God didn’t send me to Cambodia for the Cambodian people, but rather He sent me to heal me and strengthen his bond to me.
In Cambodia, I was reintroduced to the power of prayer.  I witnessed people of faith… for years, my faith was like a dwindling flame. By being around members of our medical team, especially Linda, Patrick and meeting Chom No, I realized that I was prayer deprived. It was in my moments of reflection that I knew I was a “diluted” Christian, meaning that I have been so “washed down” by working with and being around non-Christians. I was filled with negativity… I forgot what it felt like to turn to God for everything. I carried worries and tried to find solutions, when all I needed to do was call on God.
I had been journaling every day in Cambodia and I decided at the end of the trip, I would continue my journaling because I really enjoyed being connected to God. Prior to this trip I committed myself to Practicing the Presence, but I found it difficult… but since coming back I have been spending 15 – 30 minutes every morning reading scripture and blogging about my thoughts and prayers.  I have never felt closer to God and as a result I am better able to hear and see that He has been giving me glimpses of his bigger picture and I am witnessing him answering my prayers... prayers to things I have been praying on and off about for many years.
My greatest fear in coming back from Cambodia was that I would forget the things and lessons God showed me there. I was scared that I would revert back to being a diluted Christian, suckered into our selfish, consumer society. But in our meetings with David Collins, he reminded that changes don’t need to be drastic, changes can be simple.  Changes are internal and meant for God’s eyes. Eventually, others will notice the change because we will naturally through God become more gracious, forgiving and merciful… just like our Father in Heaven.
So I can say with confidence that I will continue in my morning devotions and my walk with Christ so that Cambodia won’t be a memory but a trip that has changed my Christian practice.

How has God answered my prayers... through my loving husband.  It is so apparent that this year is a year of change, just as God foretold me.  This is the first time and likely the only time we will ever not  vacation together.  But it was through these 2 separate vacations that God spoke to each of us, so that we could each hear His voice in the ways we needed. So Father I thank you for not only ensuring our safety in these trips, but also our growth in faith through you.  I trust you. Thank you, Lord.

Love Each Other and Show True Humility to Everyone

John 15:1-15
Jesus the True Vine
I command you love each other in the same way I love you. And here is how to measure it- the greatest love is shown when people lay down their lives for their friends. (12,13)

This, I am trying.  I am trying to love the ones who do not care to be loved by me.  I do my utmost to be inclusive and not to be selfish.  But I do know that I need more help in this department for I am far from being perfect.  So Father, I pray for rest in your arms and I pray for energy and compassion for so that I can keep trying to shine your ray of love to them through me.

Titus 3: 1-8
Do What Is Good
We should be gentle and show true humility to everyone. God saved us not because of our good deeds, but because of his mercy. As a sign of our gratitude, we must be thankful and let God work in us as means of thanking His goodness.

Father, I pray that you will allow me to show grace and humility to everyone and allow me to have the patience to greet everyone with a smile.

Follow the Holy Spirit

John 15:14-31
Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit
In this passage, Jesus tells his disciples that within all believers, is the Holy Spirit, who will give us peace of mind and heart and teach us everything the Father wants of us.  I know this is true as I have personally felt the Holy Spirit touch various aspects of my life and I have felt his presence during worship.

Titus 2:1-10
Promote Right Teaching
"Let your teaching be correct, so that it can't be criticized."(8)
This particular passage is about being a role model to others. Not just forging ahead full speed, but being methodical so as to ensure no one can "back stab" you and allow your mis-step to misrepresent God's goodness.

Father, as I step out to be your servant, please protect me.  Unfortunately, I worry alot, I know to leave these worries at your feet and in your hands.  I ask for your strength and wisdom in these days to come as I know Satan's army will be knocking on my door.

Ask and You Shall Receive...

John 14:1-14
Jesus the Way to the Father
"You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, because the work of the Son brings glory to the Father.  Yes, ask anything in my name and I will do it." (13,14)

Father, this passage was crying out to me.  Yesterday I asked for rest and strength because my plate has been overfilled with work.  You told me last weekend, my work can be used to honour you.  So I do my work proudly and in your name to bring you glory.  As such, I couldn't get up yesterday to do my morning devotion and last night, I couldn't find 30 minutes either... a poor excuse when I tell you I love you.

However, in my conversation with my husband, you showed me that you haven't abandoned us, and that you are asking us to just stop... and listen... for you are giving us signs.  You are telling us that we just need to ask and you will provide.  I have this yearning to have children, desire to be a mom and to raise children.  To be honest, I don't really care for being pregnant because I hate being sick and I hate being fat.  I have enough trouble losing the weight I have now sheerly from just aging and dealing with my slower metabolism.
I ended up missing my aerobics class because my instructor's father-in-law passed away... which brings me to recall how precious life is.  Why am I wasting my time being depressed about things I don't have when I should be cherishing what I do have.

Father, you know what is in my heart and you know what is in my husband's. So Father, I ask in the name of Christ Jesus that I can give birth to at least one child of my own fathered by current husband.

Titus 1:1-16
Titus' Work in Crete
"Everything is pure to those whose hearts are pure" (15)
I think this is why I like working with children!  On the flip side, it says that those who are corrupt claim they know God, but deny him just in the way they live...
Father, I pray for a pure heart to radiate your love.

Work is a Blessing from God

John 13:1-20
Jesus Washes His Disciples Feet
"But if I don't wash your feet, you won't belong to me (8)
How true is it that a servant is not greater than the master. Nor are messengers more important than the one who sends them. That is the path of blessing." (16,17)

In reading this I am reminded to be humble.  All people are equal in the eyes of God.  I am no better than my neighbour.

2 Timothy 4:9-12
This passage is about Paul recalling those who left him/forgotten him and those he sent out to continue to preach God's word. Who would I be?  One who loves this life more and forgets how good the Lord has been to me or one who is actively sharing God's love with everyone.

Yesterday's sermon is how work is a part of our life.  Work is a blessing from God.  Although work has been tainted by sin, work can be used to glorify God.  Because work is such a big component of our lives, it must be treated like a prayer to God, where we actively seek God at work and do things, touch others so others may see God through us.

I know this is something I actively do and yesterday's sermon definitely solidified my intentions and my recent prayers for strength and encouragement.

Striving to Fight the Good Fight

John 12:37-50.
The Unbelief of the People
"Lord who has believed our message?  To whom will the Lord reveal his saving power?"  But the people couldn't believe, for Isaiah also said, " The Lord has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts - so their eyes cannot see, and their hearts cannot understand, and they cannot turn to me and let me heal them." (38, 40)

There were many believers, but they were quiet believers.  They were the ones who silently worshipped God, but wouldn't openly admit their belief because they feared what others thought. "For they loved human praise more than the praise of God."(43) This line hits home for me.  Because I know I am a quiet believer.  I am just coming out of the closet, but at least I am admitting it and I am making a change, taking a stand for Christ.

"I have come as a light to shine in this dark world, so all who put their trust in me will no longer remain in the darkness... I have come to save the world, not to judge it. But all who reject me and my message will be judged at the day of judgement by the truth I have spoken." (46-48)

Yes, Lord! I have seen your glorious light and I am following it as best as I can. I pray Father, that this light will continue to brighten so I don't lose sight of you.

2 Timothy 4:5-8
Paul's Final Words
Paul tells us to keep a clear mind and to not be afraid to suffer for Christ.  Our work is to bring others closer to God.  Our prize awaits us when Christ returns.  I want to be able to say the same words, Paul says: I have fought a good fight, I have finished the race and I have remained faithful." (7)

The Courage to Say Grace

John 12:20-36
Jesus Predicts His Death
In this passage, Jesus tells the people that the Son of Man will die, so that we can all become children of the light.  His death will bring glory to God.

2 Timothy 4:1-4
Preach the word of God.  Be persistent, wheather the time is favourable or not.  Patiently correct, rebuke and encourage your people with good teaching. (2)
The passage continues with people wanting to follow lies, to follow what is pleasing to their own ears, rather than what is meant by God.  I see this in our acts of selfness and greed.  I'm always seemingly cautious when bringing up God, here I am asked to not do that.  If God is central in my life, He will show himself through me at all times.  I should not be afraid or embarrassed to share my love of Him with everyone...

I should feel OK to pray before my meal in the staffroom... Father, I pray that you give me the courage to do this openly without feeling awkward so that I can do what is right in your eyes.

The Importance of Reading the Bible.

John 12:12-19
The Triumphal Entry
In this passage, the Pharisees see the power of Jesus based on the numbers of people who came to welcome him with palm branches.  This is what we should see - everyone praising God.  We shouldn't see people trying to undermine the beauty Christ brings.

2 Timothy 3:10-17
Paul's Charge to Timothy
"Yes, and everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.  But the evil people and impostors will flourish." (12,13)
To live a godly life, studying the Bible is necessary for spiritual growth.
The Bible teaches us what is true.  We really don't need to read supporting texts to the Bible... The Bible also shows us that is wrong in our lives and helps us to do what is right.

So Father, I pray for your sense of discipline to submerge in your word every day.  I know this morning, I fell out of my normal routine because I was too tired to get up at 6am and as such am writing out my devotion at this time.

Evidence that the End is Coming... The Heart of Humanity

John 12:1-11
Jesus Annointed at Bethany
In this passage, Jesus has dinner with Lazarus, whom he has just raised from the dead.  To honour him, Mary used expensive perfume to wash Jesus' feet. Judas was alarmed and scolded her for using the perfume.  Judas said, " It should have been sold and the money given to the poor" (5).  Jesus then says, "Leave her alone.  She did it in preparation of my burial.  You will always have the poor among you, but I will not be here with you much longer." (7) Because so many people were wanting to see and follow Jesus, the Pharisees decided it was time to have him killed.  They also decided to have Lazarus killed since Jesus had risen him from the dead.

This gives me a glimpse of what people via Satan can do to extingish people's faith.  I pray for courage Father.  Yesterday I shared my short 5 minute video to Cambodia with my class.  The is a lot of "Christian" content in there.  I pray for your hand of protection from parents and school board members who may, under the direction of Satan, come and try to "extinguish" my work.

2 Timothy 3:1-9
The Dangers of the Last Days
Wow! This passage is describing how people will act in these days before Christ comes back.  It sounds like the Day is near for his return:
For people will only love themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. They will be unloving and forgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control; they will be cruel and have no interest in what is good. They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God." (2-5)

We are told to stay away from these people as they will rub off on us. These people have Satan's power and easily harm the vulnerable.

So Father I ask for your shield of protection from these soldiers of Satan. I pray that you will keep me pure and strong.

Leading a Pure Life by Building God's Fortress

John 11:47-57
The Plot to Kill Jesus
"Why should the whole nation be destroyed? Let this one man die for the people." (50)
This passage is about how the Pharisees see it is time to kill Jesus because he has performed too many miracles and if word got out, Jewish temples and perhaps all Israelites would be destroyed by the Roman empire.

Jesus did die for the people.  He died for us, not just literally and physically, but so that we could have eternal life with God.  What a blessing that is.  Hallelujah!

2 Timothy 2:22-26
An Approved Worker
Based on the commentary, God wants us to live a pure life. This consists of 4 things:
  1. recognizing our potential to sin
  2. avoiding influences that could inspire lust
  3. pursuing faith, love and peace
  4. spending time with other believers whose hearts are pure.
We must guard our minds, our thoughts. By staying close to the Lord, we will build a strong fortress around our life, making it harder for Satan's arrows of temptation to get through. Father, I thank you for this message and I pray that you will build this fortress around me and guard my mind and my heart (and Alice's too) so that I can serve and glorify you.  Let me, through you, be an inspiration to others to seek you.  Let them not see "me", but you.
